Birds’ first location in the UT campus area opened in November 2011. This is their fifth store, and my third mural for Birds. I’ve helped developed and shepherd the Birds aesthetic since the beginning, so obviously the goal with any large project like this is to be true to the brand but also not be repetitive. A lot of different motifs inspired the imagery for this mural, coming out of conversations I had with Birds’ owner. A summary: a little bit sports, a little bit rock’n roll, Philadelphia Freedom, 1976, tube socks, Dr. J. There are three panels, each measuring about two feet high and twenty feet across, and features a mix of intricate illustration work and archival imagery. The finished pieces were printed on long rolls of paper and installed wallpaper-style.
